This Wind Mask is hand-carved by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Gilbert Dawson. It has been carved from red cedar, painted in black, red, and white acrylic, and adorned with feathers.

This Wind Mask represents a human-like personification of wind in the Kwakwaka'wakw "A̱tłaḵ̓ima", or "Dance of the Forest Spirits".

There is a part of the dance that revolves around Kwakwabalas, a young boy that is given the ability to protect all living beings in the forests. After Kwakwabalas attains the ability to protect, he begins his journey home but notices that the path is blanketed in fog. At that moment, the Creator calls upon Wind to clear the way for the boy, because Kwakwabalas must share his gift with his relatives.

Wind Masks are often depicted with open pursed lips, painted white, and embellished with feathers that move about as the wearer dances.

The mask, including the feathers, measures approximately 16 inches or 40 1/2 centimeters high, 7 1/2 inches or 19 centimeters wide, and about 5 3/4 inches or 14 1/2 centimeters deep.

The last image shows the artist holding the mask.
